Biography

James Mattingly was born about 1825. He was the son of John L. Mattingly. He married Margaret (Mary) Jane Phillips on 8 Feb 1847.[1]

James and Margaret J Phillips's daughter Mary E Mattingly was born on 31 March 1854 in Union, Kentucky, United States.[2]

James and Margaret Philips Mattingly's son James E Mattingly was born on 3 April 1857 in Kentucky, United States.[3]

In the 1870 census James was in Uniontown, Union, Kentucky. He was 46 years old and was born in Kentucky. He owned real estate valued at $3000 and personal property valued at $975.[4]

Death Uncertain

James Mattingly's death is uncertain. There are two James Mattingly's born in 1824 in Kentucky. One was James W. Mattingly born 13 Feb 1824 who died on 11 Apr 1887 Marion County, Kentucky. The other was James Alexander Mattingly born 18 May 1824 Washington County, and died 29 Jul 1907 Saint Mary, Marion County, Kentucky. And the third was James M. Mattingly born 22 Oct 1825 and died 5 Oct 1876 Daviess County, Kentucky.

Slaves

His wife, Margaret Jane Phillips, inherited interest in some of her father's slaves (possibly named Jim, an unnamed yellow woman, Coraline, Henry, Joseph and Delpha). The unnamed yellow woman could be Mary/Milly.[5]

In the 1850 Slave Schedule James held 1 enslaved person in District 1 and 6 enslaved people in District 2, Breckinridge, Kentucky, United States.[6][7]
