Biography

I do not object to folks copying my files but please show respect for those who have done the research and credit them for their work. Their names are in the files.
Note NI16886In Marion County during the 1870 census with two eldest children. The son Christopher was named as Thomas. The 1880 census finds John and his wife (name spelled Laura) in Raywick, Marion County, Kentucky with six children at home. John and Laura were living alone in Marion County during the 1910 census. He and Laura were married at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and their witnesses were: William Mattingly and B. M. Mattingly.
A descendant is Valerie and she was kind enough to share information.
"Enlisted in the Civil War on 10/12/61 into the 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry regiment on the side of the North. I have a photograph of the color guard. He enlisted when he was 19yr old and mustered in with William H, John S, and Nicholas. John B. fought at the locally famous battle of Perryville. He was discharged on 12/6/64. He and Laura had seven children. My grandfather was their 5th."
His death certificate and obituary was provided by Karen Fowler Caldwell:
"DIES AT CHICAGO - John B. Mattingly, a well known citizen of this county, died Tuesday night at his home at Chicago of a complication of diseases. He was about 68 years of age at the time of his death. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. Francis church. Rev. N. Werner officiated and his remains were interred in the cemetery adjoining the church. He is survived by a wife and several children."
Death Certificate #15867, Chicago, Marion County, Kentucky. John B. Mattingly, male, white, married, DOB not known, 69 years old, farmer, Birthplace - Marion Co. KY, Father-Henry F. Mattingly, born Marion Co. KY, Mother-Sallie Fowler, born Maryland (actually, this was his grandmother), DOD June 5, 1911, Under a Dr.'s care from Jan 10, 1911 - May 29, 1911 which was the last time he was seen by his Dr. The illness was 5 months duration. He died at 11:34 pm. The Physician was J. K. Cissell of Loretto, Ky. Burial was at Chicago, Ky on June 6, 1911. The undertaker was T. W. Mattingly, Chicago, Ky. The Informant: E. H. Mattingly, Raywick, Ky.

Mattingly-515 and Mattingly-484 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife; death year matches (1 Jan is probably a genealogy softward fill-in); birth years close.
