Biography
Barbara was born in 1950 in Waterbury, New Haven county, Connecticut to Sylvia (SMITH)[1918-1998] and Howard R. MATZKIN [1918-1985.] She is the sister of Jeffrey B. MATZKIN [1947- .] Howard was a lawyer in general practice in Waterbury. he was a Commissioner on the Board of Education in the mid 1960's but taking a controversial stand: strict separation of church and state in the schools, served only one term. He was later appointed to help update the city charter. Jeffrey also became a lawyer, practicing in Pennsylvania.
Barbara began using her Hebrew name Batya [as a nickname] while in grad school, about 1975-6. Batya married James J. Olsen in 1982 in Connecticut in an interfaith ceremony. They moved from Acton, MA to Concord, MA in 1986, just before the birth of their first child, Anna. Their second child, Eva, was born in 1992.
