Joseph was born in 1787 to John Peter Mauck, Jr. and Elizabeth Heiser . In 1807, he married Grace Broyles, in Tennessee, then moved to Kentucky, and finally to Gibson County, Indiana, about 1821, where they settled to raise a large family. He died in 1857 and is buried with his wife at Emerson Hill Cemetery, Montgomery Twp, Gibson County, Indiana.
In various genealogies, Joseph Mauck is said to have been born in Shenandoah County, Virginia; in Culpeper County, Virginia (repeated in his Find a Grave memorial); in Washington County, North Carolina; in Washington County, Tennessee; and in Harrison County, Indiana.
