Biography

Huguenot Descendant (Edward Maxey, Manakintown, Virginia)

Member of Sons of American Revolution (Prescott Bush, Pvt 'SC')

Eagle Scout

Lemuel Edward Mauldin III, son of Lemuel Edward Mauldin Jr and Jessie Rae Maxey, had a fantastic 42 yr career at NASA, beginning just out of High School - about 2 weeks before John Glenn’s first launch. He was a product of the Cold War, when High School math and science teachers encouraged students to do well and help the USA catch-up with the Soviets. Beginning as a college Co-op Student, becoming an electrical engineer and then an optical engineer, and finally becoming a Project Manager, he worked on some incredibly challenging and exciting missions in Earth Science (ozone hole and climate change), Planetary Science (Mars and Venus missions), Astronomy (Deep Space), and Astrobiology. For a short time just before retirement, he was the Chief Engineer on the Kepler Project, the mission that discovered new planets that can support life. He helped build three satellites (Nimbus 7, ERBS and UARS) that provided critical data to Paul Crutzen, who won the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for explaining the dynamics of how the ozone hole is formed. But perhaps his most exciting and challenging project was managing a joint project with the Russian Space Agency, starting just after the Communist Regime ended, to build a meteorology satellite (Meteor 3M) that launched from Kazakhstan on a Ukrainian Rocket (Zenit) in 2001. Ed is a proud Eagle Scout and graduate of Mississippi State University, University of Rochester, and College of William and Mary. He is still doing consulting for NASA, but mainly enjoying being retired. His main hobbies are skiing, golf, genealogy research, and woodcarving.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Ed or other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. Please, do you have any source data for the Revolutionary War service of Robert Smith? Please add into notes if you can.

First of all, Linda Cheek’s book is an old work and she is the first to point out errors in her work based on newer information. Second, I have never claimed that the Customer Smith (the County Kent Smith-Line) is my Smith line. Third, I have no opinion on controversies regarding the Lawrence Smith (Father of Yorktown Smith-Line) since I have done no research on that. Fourth, my Smith-line on Wikitree is proven by DNA with multiple connections with Big-Y, 111 Marker and 67 Marker test results with other Smith’s in my line. Fifth, if the best you can do to trace a genetic line is to research family crests, perhaps you should drop genealogy and find another research interest.

Ed Mauldin III - We share the Smith & Towneley but I don't see a Mauldin connecting with me on 23&M. I will check on SmithFTDNA. What Group are you in?

I put the Worldwide Smith information in my last comment. In case you didn't read it, here it is again: Hello Walter,

My name is Lemuel Edward Mauldin, III. I am a Smith Ancestor - Smith One Name Project Group GRP-R-269-8, Kit 350552 (ancestor Christopher Smith 1591). My WikiTree page is Mauldin-688.

I believe that Christopher Smith (1591-3) is our common ancestor. I have followed your research, looking for documentation for Christopher’s father.

I found out that my last name should be Smith after taking the 111 marker DNA test through FTDNA. I am descended from Rucker Mauldin (1760-1846) whose mother was unmarried so gave him her last name. Rucker’s father was Elizabeth’s sister’s husband, Christopher Smith (1730-1804).

I am a graduate of William & Mary, but didn’t know when I was a student that Christopher Smith (1630-1716) was a professor and head of the Indian School there. I lived in Williamsburg, Virginia for 37 years near where our ancestors lived. I am a retired NASA engineer and live in Reno, Nevada.

Would like to know more about you and your family. Come see me in Reno and stay in touch,

Ed Mauldin

Hello,

this profile needs a clean-up to clear error 811. e.g. two Biography and two Sources sections. Please take a look when you get a chance and consolidate down to one each. Thank you, Teresa Downey (Data Doctor/Arborist)

Hello,

To Volunteer just add any surnames of interest into Tags so that you have one tag for each surname and location. By doing that, when you are confirmed as a full member you can then click on those tags, and you'll be taken to a page where you'll see other genealogists who are also following those surnames and locations. I really encourage you to explore the connections it helps you make. :-)

Don't forget to Check the Volunteer Box

Also Note There is a button to click at the bottom of the page that says Add tags and Volunteer. It is rectangular.

When you have done that one of our Greeters will confirm you as a full member so that you can Edit your Profile and enter information into WikiTree. Wiki Tree Greeter ~ Andrea Pack

Mauldin-688 and Mauldin-2017 appear to represent the same person because: I think I am the Lemuel Mauldin born 1940s. Nancy Hoy, manager of this site would know. If so, I propose "merge."
