John Mansel was the son of Walter Maunsell and Hawise de Somerie. He married, secondly, Joan Beauchamp, daughter of Simon Beauchamp. He married, thirdly, Felicia Millers, daughter of Humphry de Millers. He married, firstly, Seraphina Long, daughter of Sir Philip Long. He died in 1263. He was buried at York Minster, York, Yorkshire, England. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.).3 He was brought up and educated at court. He was also known as Sir John Maunsell. He had been appointed guardian of his third wife. He held the office of Constable of Dover Castle in 1226. He held the office of Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1226. He was He was granted further Manors and lands in Berkshire, Suffolk, Sussex, Lancashire, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Kent. He held the office of Chancellor of London between 1243 and 1259. He was Cup Bearer to the King. He was invested as a Knight. Circa 1253 he founded a Priory at Bilsington, near Ashford, Kent. He held the office of Provost of Beverley in 1255. He held the office of Treasurer of York in 1255. He held the office of Lord Justiciary of England in 1258. He held the office of Constable of the Tower in 1258. He was a Member of The Council of Fifteen. [1]
