Biography

There is some uncertaintly surrounding Richard Maunsell's birthdate and parentage.

His parents were George Maunsell and probably George's second wife Frances Magrath.

A Richard Maunsell, son of a George Maunsell, was baptised at St. John's in Limerick as early as 12 Sep 1788.[1] No mother is identified in the extract, and the date better fits George's first marriage.

Richard Maunsell's age when he entered Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland on 6 November 1815 is clearly 16 in Alumni Dublinenses.[2]

Other sources have read his age at entry as 18 years and used that to infer an exact birthdate of November 06, 1797 in Limerick, Ireland.

He was in his 58th year when he died in March 1857, suggesting that he was actually born some time in 1799.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA).

He may have married Elizabeth Butler (his brother John married a wife of the same name).

He married Frances Brown.

Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland 1912 p. 74 describes him as "Rev. Richard Maunsell, of Milford, co. Limerick". He appears to have inherited Milford from his father, but to have rented out the house and lived elsewhere. Milford appear to have eventually been put up for sale by his widow in 1868.

Richard was Rector at Adare, County Limerick, Ireland.

The Limerick Chronicle of Saturday 7 Mar 1857 reported:

DEATHS.
On Thursday morning, at Dredtarsna Glebe, near Adare, after a short illness, in the 58th year of his age, the Rev. Richard Maunsell - beloved and respected by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He was affable in his manners, charitable in his disposition, and truly christian in his conduct through life. He will be interred in St. John's church on Sunday morning.
