Notes

Note N797The 1790 in York Co there was a John Mourir, on page 274 Cordorus Twp . The record indicates 2 males > 16, 1male < 16, and 2 females, all ages. Although this township is close to the border of Adams Co, it remains part of York Co. There is also a John Moure 1 male > 16, 4 males < 16, 1 female, all ages in the census index in Berwick, Cumberland, Franklin, Germany, Hamiltonban, Heidelberg, Mount Pleasant, Mount Joy, or Straban Townships, York Co. These are all in the lower part of current Adams Co. Need to locate the exact twp. 1

Deed Book 5, page 4, has land record of John Mourer of York Co, now of Franklin, buying land of William Dickey, from a Sherrif's sale, for 0 dollars in Peters Twp, Franklin Co. adjacent to William Dickey, Thomas McDowel, James McDowel and Andrew Spence containing 200 acres more or less. This was on May 14, 1790. 1

As noted under Herman, Herman's will specified that his land could not be sold until his youngest son Adam turned 21. The land in York Co. was sold on March 29, 1792 to a John Bull. (See notes under Herman.). 1

1795 list for Menallen Twp, York Co., has a John Mowrer with 200 acres. This Twp became part of Adams Co. on 1221800 when Adams was from from York. (Note: is there any coincidence between the 200 acres here and the 200 acres in the next entry?). 1

1796 tax list for Franklin Co. has a John Mowry with 200 acres, 2 horses and 5 cows. 1

The 1800 census has a John Maurer on page 286 in Franklin Co, Peter's Twp, which is the twp in which Ft. Louden was/is located. The records indicate 3 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1male 45+, 2 females 16-26. Given the ages of the females, it appears Martha is deceased. Need to check census records again. The 1800 census also has a Nicholas Mowry on page 288 in Franklin Co, Montgomery Twp showing 2 males 10-16, 2 males 16-26, 1 male 26-45 and 1 male 45+, 1 female 10-16. His relationship if any is not known. 1 1810 census for Franklin Co, Pa. has a John Mowry and Andrew Mowry on pages 166 and 167, respectively, in Lurgan Twp (n.e. corner), a John Mowry on page 141 in Peter's Twp and Nicholas Mowry on page 149, Montgomery Twp. The John in Peter's Twp. shows 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45+, 1 female 10-15. The remaining children are apparently no longer in the household. Nicholas shows 2 males 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 1 female < 10, 1 female 26-45. (The John in Lurgan Twp shows 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 2 males <10, 1 female 10-15, 2 males 16-26. Andrew shows 1 male <10, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 2 females <10, 1 female 26-45.). 1 1820 Franklin Co, census has Daniel Mowry page 108, Peter's Twp, John Mowry p. 108, Peter's Twp, and Jacob Mowery p. 110 in Peter's Twp. John shows 1 male 45+, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 45+. Given the age of the oldest female, John appears to have remarried. Daniel shows 4 males < 10, 1 male 26-45, 2 females < 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 45+. Jacob shows 3 males < 10, 1 male 26-45, 2 females < 10, 1 female 16-26. Where are George and Henry?. 1

Notes regarding the DP Miller letter (see Herman) regarding the saw mill and island: 1

Washington Co. Maryland Land Record Book W, page 18,19: April 5, 1810, John Maura on the 24th day of November 1810, bought from Benjamin Chambers and his wife Sarah et. al., for 65 an island situated in the River Potomac called Long Island containing 21 acres. The island is described among other things as being about 1 mile above Licking Creek. (See below). 1

The book History of the Little Cove, 1967, by Harold E. Foreman, page 143 and 144 says John Mowra (Mower) (Mowry) evidently owned over six hundred acres of land about 1817. He secured nearly 300 acres "in right of" Michael Hoke also upwards of four hundred acres "in right of" Daniel Cook, which lay to the south of the Hoke tract. The Moura heirs are mentioned as late as 1838. The Mowra mill site in the Little Cove has been a source of speculation for untold years. The Mowra mill site is located a few feet from the upper Game Reserve parking lot near the present Unger and Secrist places. The well preserved ruins present an interesting study. The Mowra mill was first a small grist mill but the large later addition was probably a saw mill. One old resident referred to the mill as the Mowra-Cook Mill, the Cook family acquired it sometime later. It said the writer was unable to state the site of the Mowra home. If he lived near the mill, it would probably be the old site of the Mrs. Unger land which is but 600 ft directly east of the mill. However, there was another site nearby behind the ridge to the north still known as the Pleacher Chimney. The chimney was down but the ruins, spring of water and old fields remain as evidence. (The Little Cove is in Warren Twp, directly south of Peter's Twp. Montgomery Twp is directly east of Warren Twp with Antrim Twp directly east of Montgomery Twp. Mercersberg is in the northeast corner of Montgomery Twp right at the border to Peter's Twp. Greencastle is in Antrim Twp. Chambersburg is to the north and east of Peters Twp in Guilford Twp). 1

Orphan's Court Book C p. 122 in 1827 has a petition from Henry Mower stating that his father John Mourir died intestate in the month of August last leaving a widow, Mary, and 8 children: Jacob, John, Daniel, Henry, George, Elizabeth married Jacob Miller, Catherine married William Sedorius, and Susanna married David Burket. Henry petitioned the land be appraised for sale for the heirs. The land was described as in Peters Twp adjoining Nicholas Baker, John Wolford, John Dickey, Adam Ryder, Alexander McDowell's heirs, Jacob Leiter's heirs, and James Wachter containing 212 acres with a log house, log barn. There was another tract of land described as mountain land in the township of Warren adj. to Christian Swanks heirs, Jasper Cope and others containing 300 acres with a sawmill, a frame dwelling house and log stable. In addition there was another 300 acres adjoining Christian Swank's heirs and Jasper Cope also in Warren Twp. (Note: reference to Mary tends to indicate John remarried after Martha died - assuming Miller letter is correct about Martha dying when Uncle George was a baby. On the other hand, maybe Martha and Mary are the same. If we can pin down George's birth date, we may get time frame for death of mother.). 1 Court Book p. 134, 135 October 17, 1827, has a decision by 12 men who visited the properties in question mentioned on p. 122 and determined they could not be divided without spoiling their value. 1

On November 14, 1827, Jacob Mouer, eldest son, testified to his desire to take the property in Peter's Twp as his "freehold or firsthold" recognizing for the payment to the widow and other heirs. The court so ordered Jacob to be bound to the widow and heirs in the sum of 44.34 conditioned on the payment of the interest fo 44.78 cents to the widow annually during her life. Thereafter, on various dates in April 1828 (see next two paragraphs), John Mowrer, Daniel Mowrer, George Mowery, Jacob Miller (for himself and Elizabeth), William Saddoris (for himself and Catherine), and Henry Mowrer on behalf of himself and David Burket (and wife Susanna), from whom he had a power of attorney, agreed for the payment of 6.19 12 cents within one year with interest and the further sum of 3.09 3/4 cents upon the death of the widow agreed to their satisfaction regarding the disposal of the Peter's Twp property. Thereafter, on April 11, 1835, Daniel Mowrer acknowledged to have satisfaction in full. This would tend to indicate the widow had died. There is nothing from the others in 1835. This might indicate that all the others had left the state. 1

The book Henry Foreman Collection Fort Louden Sidelights (1969) Vol. VI. p. 28 Copyright 1970 222 High St, Chambersburg, Pa p.28 says "The John Mowra (Mowery) land was connected with the James Smith land. Jacob Mower sold some of the land to John Beaver (Book 20 p. 468) The land was about 1 mile south of Fort Louden. This is supported by the following: 1

Franklin Co, Pennsylvania, Deed book 20 page 468 in 4111828 has Jacob Mower or Mouer and Catherine his wife sold to John Beaver Jr. for 90 a certain plantation of 112 acres in Peters Twp adj to Thomas McDonal and Samuel Muth? The deed says it was the same land which the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania granted to John Mauer father of Jacob as recorded in 1790 Book 16 p. 335. Says father who died intestate, and a petition to Orphans Court August 14, 1827 by son Henry, estate divided into 3 parts, land is 1st part, lists Jacob eldest of said John. Property in Peters Twp,. 1

Washington , Maryland Land Record Book KK pages 31, 32, recorded October 8, 1828: On the 12th day of April, 1828, David Burkhart and his wife Susanna, Jacob Maura, John Maura, Daniel Maura, Henry Maura, and George Maura of the State of Pennsylvania sold to Jacob Miller of Morgan , Virginia for 300 dollars an island in the Potomac about 1 mile above the mouth of Licking Creek. Note: although the deed says Maura in the body, it is signed by Jacob Mowrer, Daniel Mowrer, Henry Mowrer, and George Mowery as well as by David Burkhart and Susanna Burkhart. (Licking Creek is about half way between Hagerstown, Md and Hancock, Md in an area known as Indian Spring. The island is currently owned by H. Arless Kesecker of RR2 Box 229, Berkeley Springs, W. Va. 25411-9652. Map 32, Plot 56, Election district 15. I spoke with Arless on 9172000 by telephone. He said the island has been owned by his family since about 1910. He said it is now called Big Sandy Island or Big Jake's island and that according to aerial surveys, it is closer to 40 acres rather than 27. He stated they could ford the Potomac on the West Va. side so for many years they planted corn on the island. However, after several years where the river rose and they had to leave their horses on the island for weeks, they stopped planting it.) Jacob Miller is believed to be the same Jacob Miller who married Elizabeth, John's daughter, inasmuch as he is from the same they moved to and inasmuch as they aren't listed as among the heirs selling the property. 1

John's estate was administered by Nicholas Baker. After the land was taken care of the personal property was sold. The heading on the list is "Vendue List of the personal property being in Peters Township of John Mowrey of Warren Twp, Franklin Co. Although there were numerous buyers, Daniel Mowrey bought a large number of items as did Jacob. A John Mowrey and Mary Mowrey, widow, did also. The property was "seized in fee simple" whatever that means which led to the sale. 1
