Biography

George (Maxwell) Maxwell IInd of Newark is a member of Clan Maxwell.

George was the son of John Maxwell and Margaret Rutherford[1][2][3][4] born after 1454.

Sir William Maxwell of Calderwood settle the lands of Newark and Finleystone on his second son George Maxwell. It was he who built the original tower and gatehouse of Newark Castle in the early part of the 15th century. Overlooking the Clyde estuary towards Dumbarton, the castle stood within a barmkin wall with round towers in the corners, one of which remains. This was later converted in to a Dovecot.

He had issue:

  3. Archibald Maxwell of Stanely[1]

Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, 1424-1513, charter number 1352 on p. 275 His father gave him Newark (Finlastoun) on 7 January 1476. [5]

The Barony of Fynlastoun afterwards the Barony of Newark This notice of the Maxwells of Newark is taken from Walter MacFarlane's geographical collection. The name of the author is not know: "Sir John Maxwell of Calderwood hath with ther Fynlastoun afterwards called the barony of Newark, and is lately sold by them. they were a race of brave gentlemen and in reputation inferior to none in this country."[6]

George Maxwell of Newark died before 16 Nov 1484.[1] [7]

Research Notes

  • dob not yet confirmed. His father married his first wife in Dec 1450 and they had three children putting the second marriage after 1453. His father died in 1476 placing George's birth between those two date.
