Biography
This profile is part of the Maxwell Name Study.
The progenitor of Maxwell's in Sackville, NB.
Gershom Maxwell was born on December 27, 1755.[1] He was the son of William Maxwell and Unknown. He married Nancy Tower on January 19, 1778.[1]
Gershom or Gersham, moved from Sackville to Slacks Cove, first to farm, then to work in the grindstone industry at that location. It became a family operation. In 1810, the Read Company contracted local residents from the Rockport/Slacks Cove area to cut stone. Those contractors included Joseph Tower, Jonathon Ward, Gersham Maxwell and Gideon Maxwell, all sons or son in laws of Gersham Maxwell. Their descendants continued on in that business until the market dropped out early in the 20th century. [2]
Gershom passed away 16 Jan 1828 and was buried in Rockport Cemetery, Rockport, Sackville Parish, Westmorland Co., New Brunswick.[3] .
