James was born on 26 March 1735 and was baptised on 27 March 1635 at Eastwood, Renfrewshire. He was the sixth child of John Maxwell of Pollok and Barbara Stewart.[1][2]
He married Frances Colhoun, second daughter of Robert Colhoun of St. Christopher, younger son of Colhoun of Kenmure. on 23 Nov 1764.[3] However according to ScotlandsPeople there was a reading of Banns at Eastwood, Renfrewshire dated December 1764[4] and the marriage at Barony, Lanarkshire on 11 December 1764[5].
