Biography
James Stephen May II was born on August 2, 1890 to James Stephen May I and Barbara Kofler in Youngstown, Ohio[1]. By 1897, James and his family moved to New Castle, Lawrence, Pennsylvania where his mother passed away[2]. He and his father shortly thereafter moved in with his grandmother, Catherine Kofler and her children (James' aunts), Lena and Mary[3][4].
By 1912, James and his father had moved out of the Youngstown area and into the city of Cleveland residing at 2236 E 95 St[5]. He remained in this location until about June 5, 1917 at the latest, when he moved to 1360 E 95 St, Cleveland, Ohio and signed up for the WWI draft [6].
Shortly after this move and decision, James marries Helen C Maloney on December 1, 1917[7]. The couple moves in together before James is officially enlisted in the army on August 30, 1918[8]. They can be found at 11621 Durant Ave, Cleveland, Ohio. During his time in the National Army, James went through Central Officers' Training School at Camp Gordon[9], Georgia, and was honorably discharged from the army as a private just 3 months later.
After the war, James returned home to his wife and the two truly started their life together. In 1920, they took in his widowed father[10] who had been living in Garrettsville, Portage, County, Ohio[11]. At this time, James owned his home and only became better off as the 20's raged with the help of his income as a bank teller. By 1930, James and Helen had two children and they, along with his father, moved into a home at 2488 Euclid Hts Blvd, Cleveland Hts, Ohio[12]. Like many others in their general vicinity, they had a live in servant. Her name was Antoinette Jimella and she was a young Italian woman. It is not sure what happened to her or if the May family had another servant after her as the family could be seen minus a live in servant in the same house in the 1940 US Census[13]
James and Helen took at least a couple trips during their time together including one to Yellowstone National Park and Denver, Denver County, Colorado, USA in 1930[14] and the family farm in Garrettsville, Portage County, Ohio, USA.[15].
He died on or about April 26, 1971 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio[16]
