Josiah Bays (Sr.) was one of the three children of the John Bays, Jr. and Luvicy Bays family who came to Greene County, Indiana in the early 1830's. The other two children to come were Beverly Bays and Lucy Bays Bingham. Josiah, Sr. was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and 15 February 1808 he married Lettice (Letty) Mays, daughter of Christian Mayes (1758-1808) and Elizabeth Bingham Mays (1765-1808) of the same county.[1] From accounts Letty was part Cherokee Indian. Josiah, Sr. was the grandson of John Bays, Sr. who was recognized as performing Public Service during the Revolutionary War as recorded in History of Pittsylvania County by M .C. Clement pp. 176, 177.
Josiah and Letty had a family of eleven children all born in Virginia and Surry County, North Carolina and all moved to Greene County, Indiana. Two of the daughters, Amelia and Chloe, had already married.
Josiah's original land entry was S 1/2 SW 1/4 Section 32, Beech Creek Township 17 March 1836 and he received his certificate from the Vincennes land office dated 5 August 1837. Josiah and Letty sold their original land to their son, Joshua, 29 June 1841. Josiah and Letty had five girls and six boys. Josiah Bays, Sr. died 23 May 1842 and is buried in the Bays/Glover Cemetery on his original land entry in Greene County, Indiana. Then Letty Bays, the widow, continued to live through the 1850[2] and 1860[3] censuses, but her date of death is unknown. She surely was buried with her husband, but no stone has been found in the abandoned cemetery.[4]

Those tasks will complete my work on Josiah and Letty. There are a few more of John, Jr and Lavicey's children remaining. Probably won't finish them this week, maybe next week, though.
I feel really good about the improvements that are being made on the profiles of John, Jr and Lavicey's children, both here and on FS. Sometimes it seems like busy work, but I remain confident that it will pay off in the end.
