Biography

Thomas Mayes, oldest son of Sherrod Mayes while deer hunting was marked for life by a powder burn on his breast in a conflict with Shawnee Indians on Barren Creek, and later became the owner of one thousand five hundred acres of land, building and operating the first mill in that district. His wife, Miss Elizabeth Bridges, was a daughter of Thomas and Martha Jane Bridges. The Mayes-Bridges marriage at Rutledge, Tennessee, October 11, 1799 was blessed with the following children: Wiley Sr., Lucy, Sherrod, Rachel, Patsy, Lucinda, Elizabeth, Millie, Johnson, Sterling and William Mayes.
