Biography

1776 Project
Private Thomas Mayes Jr. served with 4th Battalion, Lancaster County Militia, Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.

Thomas Mayes Jr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A076317.

Thomas Mayes, Jr. was born in 1730, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, a son of Thomas Mayes & Margaret (Huston) Mayes.

In 1751, in Donegal Township, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, Thomas married Jane "Jean" Rutherford, born June 22, 1734, in Donegal Township, a daughter of Thomas Rutherford and Jean Mordah. About 1766, Thomas' younger brother, Andrew Mayes married Jean's younger sister, Mary, born February 18, 1745, in Donegal Township. [1]

Their children were born in Donegal Township, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania.

Jean (Rutherford) Mayes died August 10, 1789, at the age of 55 years and is buried in the churchyard of the Fair Forest Presbyterian Church, in Jonesville.

In 1790 he was living in South Carolina. [2]

During the American Revolutionary War, Thomas served in the 4th Battalion of the Lancaster county Militia. Thomas is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of their son, John Mayes and his wife, Margaret Crawford; and Elizabeth Mayes, who married William Davidson. This family migrated to the Ninety Six District, Fairforest Creek Settlement, in modern day Union county, South Carolina, where the family is found on the First Census of the United States.

He wrote his will on 26 Aug 1791 in Union County, South Carolina, where he wrote his will. His will mentions son Thomas Mayes, son John Mayes, son Edward. In one sentence he mentions: Margaret, Thomas, John, Edward, Jane and Elizabeth. He names James Means Sr (his son in law) and his sons Thomas and Edward as his Executers. [4]

Thomas died in 1801.

He is assumed to be buried in the churchyard of the Fair Forest Presbyterian Church. [5]

Research Notes

  • James Means, born 1757, in Ireland, died in 1807 and is also buried in the churchyard of the Fair Forest Presbyterian Church, in Jonesville. He is the husband of Margaret Mayes, 1762-1835, a daughter of this Thomas and Jean Mayes. See also: Find A Grave: Memorial #46104789
  • Elizabeth (Mayes) Davidson, 1775-1841, another of Thomas' and Jean's daughters, is buried with her husband William Davidson, in Mount Zion, Macon County, Illinois. See also: Find A Grave: Memorial #24837330
  • Thomas' DAR records are found under the spelling of the surname as "Mays" with the disclaimer, " As such, the DAR assigns a single standard surname that covers variant spellings of similar surnames. While the surname may appear incorrect, this does not mean it is in error. This spelling system ensures that patriots are not established under more than one spelling." DAR records indicate that he died after 1790 in UNION CO NINETY SIX DIST SOUTH CAROLINA
