James Washington Mayes was born on August 30, 1827 in Rutherford, North Carolina, United States, son of Stephen Mayes (1804–1872) and Vianah Green (1812–1884).[1][2][3]
James (27) married Mary Ann Mitchell (22) (born October 17, 1832 in Jackson, Alabama; daughter of Humphrey Bates Mitchell (1805–1868) and Kissiah Bynum (1810–bef. 1880)) on November 30, 1854 in DeKalb County, Alabama.[4] Their children were:
