Biography

Mary McAlpine, the daughter of Peter McAlpine and Sarah Zavitz was born about 1854 in Ontario, Canada in Sarnia, Lambton County and died July 24, 1939 in Los Angeles, California.

In 1867, shortly after the death of her mother, her father moved the family to Watertown, Tuscola, Michigan. He would remain there until his death but his children, including Mary, all married and moved to different areas of Michigan and beyond.

On October 18, 1877 Mary married Louis Vanwinkle (Van Winkle), a man who at that time was twice her age, in Saginaw, Michigan. Louis was a Lumberman and they moved around quite a bit. In 1880 they were living in Surrey, Clare, Michigan and in 1900 they were living in Garden, Delta, Michigan. Then between 1900 and 1910, Louis got out the lumber trade, moved to Santa Monica, California, and became a farmer. The timing of this change makes sense as 1900 marked the end of the Logging Era in Michigan which ran from 1840-1900 In 1920 he was still farming but by then they had moved back to Michigan and were living in Indianfields, Tuscola, Michigan.

Louis died on July 25, 1923, at the age of ninety, in Indianfields. Mary, I assume having had a taste of California, moved to Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, sometime after his death. She died in Los Angeles County on July 24, 1939.

They had one child, John Bonner VanWinkle, b. 21 Nov 1883, MI d. 15 Dec 1952, Los Angeles, CA (Age 69 years)
