James McAlpine was born of Scottish parents in Bangor, County Mayo.
At an early age James went to sea for several years. Arriving in Australia he was lured to the Goldfields. He made his way to New Zealand and was a pioneer of the West Coast diggings with a degree of success. James then headed to the North Island for some time eventually making his way to Marlborough around 1879.
James settled in Marlborough purchasing a property at Manaroa. In 1885 he secured the Mail contract.
James McAlpine held the Government mail contract for some years delivering between Manaroa and Torea. In the early 1900's he arranged for purchase of the oil launch "Ina" to service the Pelorus and Keneperu Sounds in Marlborough. The launch to be used for carrying mail and ferrying passengers. [1]
He married Rose Victoria Whalton in 1875. [2]James and Violet had 7 children and also adopted a girl, Violet Annie Groome. James McAlpine died in 1905 aged 73.[3], [4] and is buried at Manaroa Anglican Cemetery, Marlborough, with his wife Annie.
