DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ichabod by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ichabod:

I'm interested in this, too. Is there evidence for Mary, wife of Ichabod, being the daughter of Hezekiah Stratton?

I did find a Mary McBrayer listed in the 1850 US Federal Census for Buncombe, North Carolina, but I think it's a different one, and I don't think she's married to James. It looks more like he took in his brother's widow, but that's just a wild guess.

Mary was the daughter of Solomon Stratton and Jane Witten. She was born in South Carolina about 1782. Icabod is my 4th great grandfather.

Thanks for commenting. The only other Stratton of this family in the area who could be her father is Hezekiah. Solomon's sons were too young to be the father of Mary "Polly" and Hezekiah's sons were also too young to be her father. Hezekiah (b abt 1741) and Solomon (b abt 1743) are associated together in court records, the August Court 1778 record and a road report in the November 1778 court record. I believe they were brothers along with John (b abt 1740), Henry (b abt 1745), Abraham (b abt 1748), Ezekiel (b abt 1751) and Isaac (b abt 1755). In 1779 Hezekiah went to Burke County, NC and Solomon went to Montgomery County, VA. Isaac went to Tazewell County, VA in about 1810. Ezekiel is mentioned once in a court case in Burke County, NC associated with Hezekiah and also in Amherst county on a Nov 1778 deed transaction associated with Henry. The transcriptions of an early deed in Burke county for Hezekiah were badly transcribed as Zedicaha/Zadecaha instead of Hezekiah. The selling of his property in Amherst corresponds closely with the purchase of land in Burke County. Other court records have Hezekiah or Kiah. I have DNA matches to descendants of my ancestor Solomon, more distant matches to descendants of John, Hezekiah and Isaac. John stayed in Amherst County, I am uncertain about whether Henry and Abraham stayed in Amherst or went somewhere else. It is just a preponderance of evidence and some DNA matching leading me to these conclusions. I am working on a timeline of records for all these "Brothers" putting together court records, marriage records, and deed records. Hezekiah's descendants seem to have gone with the "Strutton" spelling of Stratton. The spelling of Stratton as "Strutton" is also used in some records for Solomon, but his descendants went with the more common spelling.

The wife of Ichabod McBrayer is NOT Mary Stratton McBrayer Whitaker the daughter of Solomon Stratton. This Mary married his brother James McBrayer as his 2nd wife as evidenced by a deed in Deed Book C, page 414, Floyd County Kentucky' which states that James McBrayer "inter married with Polly Stratton daughter of said Solomon Stratton dec'd". The Mary that married Ichabod is the daughter of Hezekiah Stratton of Burke County North Carolina. Both Marys were called Polly.
Interesting find, Susan. Do you have evidence for the second part of what you said? That the Mary that married Ichabod is the daughter of Hezekiah Stratton? How would we know that?
