Biography

Summary

Olivia McBride was born in 1895 in Riverside County, California, United States. She was the younger of two daughters raised by Robert McBride and Amanda Anderson. Olivia McBride was 31 years old when she married Roy Wilson in 1927 in Los Angeles. Their first daughter was born in 1928, and their second daughter was born in 1930. In 1934 Roy Wilson died; he was 43 years old. Olivia remained a widow and raised their daughters as a single parent in Los Angeles. Olivia died in 1976 in Orange County, California. She was 80 years old, and was survived by both daughters, 6 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.

Birth

Olivia Marie McBride was born on 5 December 1895 near Hemet, in Riverside County, California, United States. [1] [2] She was a daughter of Robert Dunbar McBride and Amanda (Anderson) McBride.

Life

Family

Olivia Marie McBride was the younger of two children born to Robert Dunbar McBride and Amanda (Anderson) McBride.

FIG. 1 - Three generation ancestor diagram for the two McBride sisters.

Paternal Grandparents

Alexander McBride (1814-1865), father of Robert McBride, was born and raised on a farm near Lowellville, Ohio. In 1831 he apprenticed as a printer. After learning the trade he relocated to Butler, Pennsylvania. He was 25 years old in 1839 when he married Maria McKee in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Maria McKee (1821-1881), mother of Robert McBride, was born at Butler, Pennsylvania. She was 14 years old in 1835 when her father died, which left her mother a widow with six children ages 4 to 19 years. Four years later Maria McKee was 18 years old when she married Alexander McBride in Butler, Pennsylvania in 1839.

Maternal Grandparents

Ola Andersson (1828-1894), father of Amanda Anderson, was born in Hasslöv, Halland County, Sweden. A source citation for his marriage to Kristina Kristiansdotter has not yet been discovered. Ola Andersson was 43 years old in 1871 when his first child Amanda was born.

Kristina Kristiansdotter (1838-deceased), mother of Amanda Anderson, was born in 1838 in Vanstad, Sweden. A source citation for her marriage to Ola Andersson has not yet been discovered. Kristina Kristiansdotter was 33 years old when her first child Amanda was born.

Parents

Robert Dunbar McBride (1853-1934), father of Olivia McBride, was the sixth of seven sons born to Alexander McBride and Maria McKee. Robert was 12 years old when his father Alexander McBride died in 1865, leaving his mother Maria McKee McBride a widow with four sons under the age of 17. Fortunately Maria did not have to raise the boys alone; five years later the 1870 census reported that Maria McBride and her 4 sons lived in the home of Maria's 81 year old mother Margaret Dunbar McKee. The 1870 census listed Margaret Dunbar McKee as head of household and owner of the home where the McBride boys were raised by their widowed mother and widowed grandmother.

Amanda Anderson (1871-1946), mother of Olivia McBride, was born in Nötte, Grevie Parish, Kristianstad, Sweden. Amanda Anderson was the oldest of three children raised by Ola Andersson and his wife Kristina Kristiansdotter. Amanda emigrated from Sweden to the United States in 1889 when she was 18 years old.

Early Years

Marriage of parents

Robert Dunbar McBride was 39 years old when he married Amanda Anderson on 25 February 1893 in Colorado City, Colorado. Amanda Anderson was 21 years old when she married Robert McBride. [3] He was a carpenter and cabinet maker. [4]

Their Children

  1. Virginia Margaret McBride - (1893-1979)
  2. Olivia Marie McBride - (1895-1976)

1900 US Census

The United States census of 1900 started 1 June 1900. [5]

On 4 June 1900 Virginia and Olive McBride were sisters who lived with their parents in a 4 person household in San Luis Obispo, California. The census enumerator did not record the house number or the name of the street in San Luis Obispo. [6]

  1. Robert D. McBride, head of household, male, born April 1853, age 47 years, married 7 years, born in Pennsylvania, father born in Ohio, mother born in Pennsylvania, occupation carpenter, 0 (zero) months not employed, can read, write, and speak English, rented home.
  2. Amanda McBride, wife, female, born July 1871, age 28 years, married 7 years, born in Sweden, father born in Sweden, mother born in Sweden, immigration to United States in 1889, can read, write, and speak English.
  3. Virgile O. McBride, daughter, born December 1893, age 6 years, born in Colorado, father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in Sweden, can read, write, and speak English.
  4. Olide McBride, daughter, born December 1895, age 4 years, born in California, father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in Sweden, can speak English.

NOTES - The handwritten census enumeration page records Virginia's name as Virgile O McBride and Olivia's name as Olide McBride. These unique mis-spellings of the name of each daughter occur only in the 1900 census. Genealogy websites such as FamilySearch encourage treatment of these mis-spellings as an "alternate name" when they are really nothing more than a footnote about a handwriting error on the 1900 census. Family history from Olivia's grandchildren notes that Olivia and Virginia called each other Virgie and Olive, [7] and that neither daughter had a birth certificate. During their lives their first and middle names on civil and vital records were Olivia Marie and Virginia Margaret, with occasional misspellings such as the 1900 census.

1901 - Olivia's narrative about Wilmington

In December 1900 Olivia turned 5 years old. In the 1960s Olivia wrote a narrative about her childhood, starting in 1901 as a 5 year old in Wilmington, California, then a small town on the edge of San Pedro Bay.

"I was born in Hemet, California and we moved to Wilmington when I was five years old. I lived there most of my childhood and teenage years, and will always think of it as my home. The town was one street running from the water front north for a couple miles. It was called Canal Street and from First Street to about 4th Street (the East and West streets) there was approximately two or three dozen small stores, and a few houses. Some of the stores were empty, and my father, being a carpenter, opened up a cabinet shop in one of them and we lived in the back of the shop." [8]

One flaw in this memory written by Olivia six decades after moving away is that the east west streets in Wilmington are named with letters, not numbers (A St., B St., etc).

FIG. 2 - View of Canal Street in Wilmington California about 1900.
FIG. 3 - Olivia Marie McBride with her Winchester .22 caliber rifle and the family dog, who may have been named Nero. Unknown location in Southern California, and unknown date, possibly about 1908. Olivia's rifle was inherited by one of her grandchildren. [9]

1910 US Census

On 16 April 1910 the teenage McBride sisters lived in a four person household with their parents on Fries Street in Wilmington, California, near San Pedro Harbor. [10] The census enumerator recorded the name of the street but not the house number. Fries Street runs north and south two blocks west of and parallel to Canal Street, which was renamed Avalon Boulevard in the 1920s. [11]

  1. Robert McBride, head of household, male, age 57 years, first marriage, 18 years, born in Pennsylvania, father born in Ohio, mother born in Pennsylvania, speaks English, occupation carpenter, self-employed, yes employed on 15 April, 0 (zero) weeks unemployed during 1909, rented home
  2. Amanda McBride, wife, female, age 38 years, first marriage, 18 years, mother of 2 children, both still living, born in Sweden, father born in Germany, mother born in Sweden, immigrated to USA in 1889, naturalized citizen, speaks English

  4. Olive McBride, son, male, age 14 years, single, born in California, father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in Sweden, speaks English

1910 US Census notes. In a clear error, the handwritten census enumeration page listed Olive as a son; she was a daughter.

1913 - Virginia's first marriage

On 17 July 1913 then 19 year old Virginia McBride married George R. Swindle in Wilmington; 17 year old Olivia McBride was listed on the marriage certificate as a witness. [12] [13]

1916 - Virginia's only child

Richard R. Swindle was born on 12 February 1916 in Los Angeles, California to Virginia McBride and George R. Swindle. [14]

1917 - Olivia engaged to Roy Wilson

A faded and low resolution photocopy captured fragments of two postcards written to Miss Olivia McBride by Roy Wilson while he was in the Army. The cards were postmarked 1917. His handwriting was precise and beautiful. The cards also included shorthand messages.[15]

Received your two letters addressed to Fort McDowell. Will write you.
Nothing much to do this afternoon so thought I would drop you a few lines. How is the world treating you?

On 12 April 1918 Olivia McBride wrote a letter to the U.S. Army asking about her fiancé Roy Wilson (see FIG. 4 below). Roy's marriage proposal would have been made to Olivia before he was drafted into the U.S. Army for the war in Europe. Like Roy before he was drafted into the Army, Olivia was a single adult with a full time job living at her parents home.

FIG. 4 - Digital image of a carbon copy of a letter typed by 22 year old Olivia McBride to the U.S. Army on 12 April 1918 asking about the status of her fiancé, Roy Wilson, who had been drafted into the Army and was deployed on active duty. In this Census his first name was recorded as Robert, not Richard. [16]

Research Notes

  1. FamilySearch ID - LY54-7V4
  2. About Olivia's Birth. Olivia's [private granddaughter] heard a family story from her mother (Olivia's daughter) about a time in the 1940s when Olivia and her sister Virginia drove to the Native American Reservation hear Hemet, Riverside County, California, where Olivia was delivered by a midwife. The goal of their expedition was to get an affadavit proving Olivia's birth in California, because apparently Robert and Amanda McBride did not register Olivia's birth with Riverside County. Virginia McBride, born in El Paso County, Colorado, also has no known birth certificate.

Memories: 1
Enter a personal reminiscence or story.
I knew Olivia, my maternal grandmother, as "Grandma Wilson." I remember visiting her when I was a young child with my mother and siblings. Grandma Wilson operated a booth at the Los Angeles Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax. Her booth, Wilson's Loom Room, sold weaving, beading, and other craft supplies. I also remember visiting Grandma Wilson when I was a young teenager, with my mother and siblings, when Grandma Wilson lived in Fullerton, California.
