Biography

Archie was born in 1881. He was the son of Archibald McBride and Margaret McGrath. He passed away in 1956 and is buried in the Whataroa Cemetery (Plot 55, Block 4).

When his father died in 1896, the 15-year-old Archie helped his widowed mother care and provide for the younger members of the family. He went to work in the flax mill and later on the local road construction. From 1910, Archie and his brother, Tom, were able to purchase land and farming became his great interest. He loved the land - land that he had cleared and developed. He grazed sheep, milked cows and supplied the local dairy factory. Later, he turned to beef cattle.^[1]
