James was born on the family farm in Peel Township, Wellington County.[1] He was the fifth of seven children of Joseph Manus and Catherine O'Grady McCormick.[2] (There were two boys named James in the family. James Michael was born in 1866 and died in 1871.)[3]
James was 11 when his father died.[4] He lived and worked on the family farm for many years,[5][6] He purchased the farm from his mother in 1908, when he was about 40 years old.[7] He turned the farm over to his sister Mary and her husband Jacob Walter in 1914.[8]He appears to be working in Guelph as a machinist in 1921.[9]
James married Margaret Morris at Our Lady Immaculate Church in Guelph when he was 55 years old.[10]
He died at age 90 and is buried in Marymount Cemetery, Guelph, Ontario.[11]
