03 Dec 1895: Daily Picayune: "DEATH OF JOHN McCABE All that was mortal of John McCabe, a well-known citizen and old-resident of the rear of the Third Ward, was consigned to his last resting place, in St. Patrick's cemetery No. 2, yesterday afternoon. His death occurred Sunday morning around 7 o'clock, and was sudden and unexpected. He arose at his usual hour, and, after partaking of a hearty breakfast, was about to attire himself preparatory to attending church, when he sat in a chair and peacefully breathed his last. He was born in county Monaghan, Ireland, fifty-seven years ago, and came to this city with his parents about fifty years ago.

In his youth he manifested much interest in the old volunteer fire department, being an active member of Mechanics' Company No. 6, retaining his membership in the Volunteer Association until his death. He was a brother of ex-chief of the fire department, Phil McCabe. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon from his late residence, Tulane Avenue, near Claiborne street, being attended by delegations from the Volunteer Firemen's Association and Manhattan Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and a large circle of friends. The religious services were conducted at St. Joseph's church by Father Mores.

He leaves a wife, five sons and three daughters to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and indulgent father."
