Hugh White McCaleb, Jr. was born on 4 Aug 1819 in Fayette County, Alabama. His parents were Hugh White (McKillip) McCaleb (~1780 - ~1845) and Elizabeth (Holbrook) McCaleb (~1785 - 1870).

A gentleman named William A. Moton traveled from Alabama as well and worked on the McCaleb farm.

On 21 February 1864 Hugh enlisted in the Lampasas (Texas) Confederate Guard. He mustered out on 31 May 1864.[4]

The 1880 Census[5] finds Hugh and Mahala living in Kimble County, Texas. He was 61 years old and raising stock. Family members were:

H.W. McCaleb 7

Hugh passed away on 26 Sep 1899 in Kimble County, Texas, aged 80.[6] He was laid to rest in the Red Creek Cemetery in Kimble County.[7]
