Bill McCallister, a researcher, disputes that McGlothlin was Mary's maiden name. "Many McCallister researchers have cited the marriage record for the James and Mary McAllister found in James McAllister's will probated in Bath Co. VA in 1801; however, to date there is no evidence that corroborates this connection. Until further evidence is uncovered, we treat it as speculation."[1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
Someone just added Archibald McAllister as a father of this James. This isn't correct. Archibald did have a son named James McAllister, but his wife's name was Mary McConnell and they had the following children: John, James, Archibald, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, and Ann. The James who was the son of Archibald McAllister died 20 July 1807 in Springfield, Hampshire, Virginia.
Verbatim from the Archibald McAllister genealogy.
The Last Will and Testament of James McAllister was signed 30 April 1804 in Springfield, Virginia. It was probated 19 October 1807 in Hampshire County, Virginia. In his Will, James named his wife, Mary; daughters Mary Chambers, Elizabeth Bush and Sarah King; grandsons James McAllister Bush, John Chambers and John McAllister. The executors of the Will were Henry Bush, Alex King, and William Donaldson.
I've removed Archibald as the father of this James, as it is not correct.
