Colleen, don't worry about uploading your GEDCOM!

It's more efficient to take your time and cut and paste. Here's an example of one of my GEDCOM-generated profiles: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hakes-244.

With GEDCOM imports, in addition to formatting issues, you have to skip profiles that are already on WikiTree, even if you have a lot more info than the pre-existing profile does.

You also end up having to go back and connect to all the skipped profiles and add them to lists of descendants on profiles, etc. See one of my unedited profiles with that problem here: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Adams-18240. Child: @I447@ represents a skipped person, but the only way I can figure out who it was is to compare my ancestry tree to the WikiTree profile. Cut and paste would have been better.

Hello Colleen,

You are now a member of the WikiTree Community. Please note we are trying to build one Collaborative Tree which means one profile per person. It is important to ensure no duplicates are entered as you add any Profiles to WikiTree.

If you need any help getting started check out the help section from the menu, top left, or head over to the G2G forum, you might want to check out the introductory WikiTree video that a member created.

Our Mentor Team are a friendly bunch of volunteers who will be glad to help you with specific problems if you have any.

Good luck growing your branches, and thanks for offering to help with our shared tree :)

My father's family remained a mystery until his death, when I discovered his mother's maiden name. That led to discovering his father, Albert Matthew McCallister, born NY January 10, 1888, married to Ella Reardon, born March 27, 1890. From there, great grandparents' names came along, but little else, and so my discoveries have led me here.

My father's tree is public on Ancestry.com: McCallister, Arthur William Info Verified. Please feel free to look through it and see if perhaps we might have family to share.

Thanks for making this wonderful avenue available....be blessed. Colleen

Hello Colleen,

Welcome to WikiTree, and thank you for your interest.

If you just want to look things up, or upload a GEDCOM for match, you do not need to take further actions.

If you want to contribute to WikiTree (add profiles, collaborate etc.), you must sign up as a volunteer. Doing so I will ask you to tell a little about your plans on your profile page. Do not volunteer unless you plan to contribute please!

After volunteering you can sign the HONOR CODE. You'll then become a full member and can help grow WikiTree through participation in the community. WikiTree also have MENTORS in case you need guidance.
