Currently, Lynda is studiously working on the WikiTree biography / profile page of Rev David Elkin, her 3rd great-grandfather, a Baptist Circuit Minister, and minor personage in the life story of Abraham Lincoln. She has collected research and documentation on him since 1985. It is her goal to present a scholarly paper within the next two years confirming his place of death in Lawrence County, Indiana within the context of a Baptist faith community. (Info current as of January 2019)
A native Midwesterner, Lynda was born in the Highland Park / Detroit area of Michigan, growing up in the north suburbs of Royal Oak and Berkley. In 1964, the family moved from Michigan to the south side of Chicago in an area abutted by Dixmoor, Harvey, and Blue Island. For her freshman year, Lynda attended Thornton Township High School and was fortunate to be the locker-mate of Danitra Vance, who went on to become the first African-American woman on Saturday Night Live.
The family relocated from the blue-collar industrial area to a farming community in Jasper County of Northwest Indiana in 1970. The town selected in which to live was undergoing changes in the education system; two rival towns were united in one school district and a new high school, Kankakee Valley High School, was eventually completed in the spring of 1971. During her high school years Lynda continued her volunteer participation in the Hunger Walks. At school she was named to be the editor of the school newspaper.
After high school, Lynda worked on the Magnificent Mile at a major Chicago bank, and supplemented her salary working at Saks Fifth Avenue department store.
Her next employment endeavor was an 8 year stint at the headquarters of Sears, Roebuck and Company, where she was mainly located in the Sears Tower. Lynda first worked for Claude Fowler, as the Assistant to the National Sporting Goods Parts Buyer for almost 3 years. During this time she also interacted with major sports figures such as Gordie Howe (hockey), Ted Williams (baseball), Sir Edmund Hillary (mountain climber and philanthropist) as they served on Sears Sports' Advisory Board.
The succeeding almost 3 year assignment was as the Assistant to the Fashion Coordinator for Girls' Clothing. During this time, Lynda handcrafted the color charts, organized clothing and accessories for the photo shoots, acted as the photo shoot stylist, booked models, assisting in planning the advertising spreads. She managed the behind the scenes activities of the spring and fall fashion presentations to the fabric companies, clothing manufacturers, and Sears' buyers.
Lynda was a non-traditional student and attended college at Wilbur Wright College, one of the Chicago City Colleges, serving as student body president for two terms, earning an Associate's with High Honors. She was the first student appointed by Chicago Mayor Harold Washington to service on the Citizens' Nominating Committee to the Chicago City College Board of Trustees.
Lynda then transferred to the flagship campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, again serving in college student governance on the campus. Additionally, Lynda served on the Illinois Board of Higher Education - Student Advisory Committee for five years. An Executive Board member for all five years, she also served as vice-chair, and then chair of the committee, providing representation of all Illinois college students to the board, often giving testimony and providing reports at the meetings throughout the year. Her major was political science - with an emphasis on organizational theory and development; her minor was Asian Studies - Japan. Lynda continued on at UIUC in the College of Education earning the degree of Master of Education in Higher Education Administration with an emphasis in educational policy and student development theory.
As an undergraduate, Lynda was accepted as an intern for the College of Education's AHCE internship program. She was selected by Dr. Francis (Frank) L. Nasca to work with him during the academic year administering the internship program. Together they published a survey of internship experiences for a 12-year time span.
After graduate school, Lynda moved to the greater Washington, DC area. From 1990-1995 Lynda worked for The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars placing college interns in substantive placements for a 16 week term. Her topical areas included: foreign policy, arms control, anti-terrorism, military and veterans' affairs, Departments of State, Defense, AID, and the United States Information Agency (USIA), cultural and educational exchanges, and women's issues. She worked with offices on The Hill, K Street, non-profits and other businesses and think-tanks to provide a quality experience for her students. She published two papers during this time on experiential education.

Thank you for being on Team Legacy Heirs for the source-a-thon. I hope we will have you join the team again for the next thon.
I enjoyed the opportunity the opportunity to participate in the Source-a-Thon this past weekend. I concentrated on one of the family names I research: Elkin / Elkins. Although I only did 15 separate profiles, it seems I went for depth and quality over quantity.
For future events, I'd love to continue working with Team Legacy Heirs.
That makes 15 more profiles that are better and healthier than they were before. That is great!! I am glad you enjoyed. I will make sure to let you know for the next thon, and am glad and honored that you want to stay with Legacy Heirs.
Thanks for having a big heart and adopting the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention those profiles need.
