Biography

Thomas was born about 1883. He was the son of Thomas McCarthy and Elizabeth Vaughan. [1]

An unexpected vindication of the system of grading employed by Mr T. R. McCarthy, manager of the Maungatapere Co-operative Dairy Company's factory, has come to hand to-day. At the annual meeting of the company yesterday a shareholder criticised the grading, alleging that, the manager had too much power. To-day the company was notified that their exhibit of four boxes of butter had been awarded a gold medal at the Panama Exhibition.[2]

The following year he volunteered for World War 1 --see provocative comments here https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ROTWKG19160510.2.4 published in the Rodney and Otamatea Times, Waitemata and Kaipara Gazette, 10 May 1916, Page 2, just three months before his older brother was killed in action in Egypt.

Thomas McCarthy served in the Army during World War 1 (service number 20930) A factory manager in civilian life, he gave his next of kin as T.P. His letter from the front was published here in the Northland Age, Volume 15, Issue 33, 25 April 1918, Page 6 [4]

The story of Betty Pitre [5] includes details of Thomas McCarthy's relationship with a woman in the UK and the birth of their child in January 1920.

He married Thelma Maurieene Masters in 1922 [6]

Mr T. R. McCarthy, who has been manager of-the Kaitaia Dairy Company during the past three years, has resigned, having accepted the position of manager of Mr J. B- McEwin’s factory at Taupiri, [7] After more than quadrupling production at the Taupiri factory, rhe returned to Kaitaia in 1929 [8] In 1935 he was appointed manager of the Te Puke Diary factory in Bay of Plenty
