- SISTER CATHERINE McCARTHY
- Sister Catherine was born in Jersey City, N.J., May 31, 1912. She entered the Novitiate in Bellingham in 1929. Sister made her first vows in 1931 and her final profession August 15, 1934.
- Sister Catherine taught the primary grades for over 50 years from 1931 - 1983. An excellent teacher, almost the size of her pupils, she had a tender, genuine love for each child she taught and down through the years there were hundreds!
- The schools Sister taught in were:
- St. Margaret School 1931-1934, 1966-1968
- St. Teresa School 1955-1959, 1964-1965
- Seattle, Washington
- St. Rose School 1970-1973
- Longview, Washington
- St. Joseph School 1959-1964
- Wenatchee, Washington
- Port Angeles, Washington
- St. Louise School 1973-1977
- Bellevue, Washington
- Assumption School 1980-1982
- Bellingham, Washington
- St. Mary School 1968-1970
- Corvallis, Oregon
- Sacred Heart School 1977-1979
- Jersey City, New Jersey
- St. Joseph School 1934-1942, 1965-1966
- Nelson, B.C.
- St. Anthony School 1942-1949
- St. Michael School 1949-1952
- Trail, B.C.
- Sister Catherine's retirement years brought her in 1983 to The Josephinum and in 1986 to St. Mary's in Bellevue.
- We shall always remember Sister Catherine's delightful sense of humor and although ill. she tried to live into joy each day, opening her arms to all who came near. Yes, we will miss our little Catherine and her warm, beautiful smile!
- You will fill me with joy in your presence. You have taught me the way of life,
- Psalm16

- Written By Sr. Catherine in 1986
- St. Margaret's was the first school. I have fond memories of the famous Fr. Cotboy.
- In the 1940's I spent a number of summers teaching CCD in little B.C towns. My frequent companion was Margaret Wood. As one priest said we were the "long and the short of it"
- In the 1970's I taught for a few years in Sacred Heart School in Jersey City with the Sisters of Charity. My sister Alice was cooking for the sister's and lived in the same building. My primary class wall all black children and many were not Catholic, but the parish felt it was important to keep the inner city school going.
- My first school was probably my favorite school. I felt that I was really independent in handling my classes. Also, it was here that the community decided
- I would make a better teacher than cook.
- I would like to be remembered as a teacher, as one who loved little children.

- McCarthy, Catherine Louise Sr. M. lmelda
- Born, Jersey City, NJ May 31, 1912
- Entered Congregation Aug. 3, 1928
- Reception Feb. 15, 1929
- Died March 28, 1988
- Catherine was the daughter of George McCarthy and Julia Lynch. Her mother died when she was quite young and Catherine spent some time in an orphanage with the Sisters of St. Joseph until her father could arrange for her care. She entered the novitiate in Bellingham as a postulant in August 1928.
- "1 would like to be remembered as a teacher, as one who loved little children." Catherine's words written during her retirement years are certainly a true reflection of her years of service. For fifty years she taught primary school children. During this time she served in almost every school staffed by the sisters of the Western Province. In the late 1970's, she spent several years teaching in Sacred Heart School in Jersey City. Her older sister Alice had been cook/housekeeper for the Sisters of Charity there and Catherine lived with her.
- Catherine delighted in teaching the little children. She was well organized and efficient in the classroom and at the same time interesting and adventurous. Her sense of humor lightened the day for many children. In addition to her classroom teaching, Catherine spent many summers in religious education in small towns in the interior of British Columbia. She and her companion, Margaret Wood shared many a laugh as they told of coping with the sometimes-primitive conditions both in living and in teaching CCD.
- Catherine's retirement years brought her in 1983 to The Josephinum in Seattle where she continued to minister to others. She used to accompany one of the residents who was almost blind on walks in downtown Seattle. In 1986, she came to St. Mary's in Bellevue. There she will be remembered as a woman of joyful hospitality, of gentle companionship and of loving prayer.
