Research Notes

Note N20Residing along with Margaret and Katherine with niece Mary Carrier /her 3 children
Record ID Number: MH:N13
PRIN MH:IF500640
Note N8Mary was born in 1872 and emigrated in 1874 (possibly) with her sister Catharine and probably more family due to age. She completed 8th grade education. Mary married William Reynolds Jr a farm laborer in 1898 at age 24. In 1900 and 1910 US censuses they reside in Darien, Genesee county. By 1915, Mary has become widowed with 4 children born 1901-1908. 1915 and 1920 census shows her in Pembroke, Genesee county. Family legend: Mary could not cope with eldest son George and sent him to Father Baker's orphanage/school in Buffalo for a period.
By 1925 census, Mary takes daughters Kathryn and Margaret to live with niece Mary Carrier (Catharine's daughter) in Leroy. (Catherine has recently died). The Carriers have apparently returned from Calif but without man of the family. Mary Carrier and daughter Elizabeth work at the Jello plant, Mary Reynolds keeps house, Kathryn (21) works as a cashier and Margaret (17) works also as laborer. Mary remains in LeRoy through the 1940 census when she and Kathryn live together.
In 1942, the newspaper article re: grand-daughter Peggy's death, she is listed as living in Oakfield. There are pictures of her in 1948 at great-grand daughter Marilyn's baptism. She then lived in Leroy with her daughter Margaret and family until she died in 1955. She is buried in St Francis Cemetery in Leroy.

A census taker might have visited a house on a later date, but the information hecollected was supposed to be about the people who were in the house on the census day. The basic census enumeration unit was the county. Each county was divided into enumeration districts, one for each enumerator. The completed forms were sent to the Commerce Department’s Census Office in Washington, D.C.

This was accomplished gradually, state by state, as we covered more and more of the census.

As required by the US Constitution, the census is a federal mandate to count every resident of the United States of America every 10 years. Census data is released to thepublic 72 years after it was taken.
