Biography

My McCarthy ancestor was great-grand-father John McCarthy (1841 – 1901). He and his four brothers (Dennis, Timothy, Thomas and Jeremiah) immigrated from somewhere in County Cork, Ireland to the City of Salem in the State of Massachusetts, USA in about 1866. They worked in the leather tanning business as laborers, tanners, and curriers . Their marriage and death records list Florence McCarthy and Margaret McCarthy as their parents.

The part of Salem that they lived in was once named South Danvers, now it is the City of Peabody. John McCarthy built his own house at 155r Lowell St, Peabody between 1871 and 1872.

A sister Mary came to Massachusetts in 1896 after the death of her husband Michael Shea. She died in 1904 at age 69. There were 11 children born to Mary and 5 were still living in the census year of 1900.

Other family names include Higgins, Cooney, O'Connell, Duggan, Burke, Nangle, Murray, Keeffe, Clancy, Donovan, Murphy, Collins, and Ahern.
