The following was printed on a keepsake from a very enjoyable night in the Munster Arms Hotel in January 1990 on the occasion of Mary and Tadgh's Ruby Wedding. Mary McCarthy & Tadhg Casey Ruby Anniversary, January 10th 1990
After spending many years in many different hospitals throughout the country fate brought Nurse Mary McCarthy to the Fever hospital in Bantry. Now some years earlier Tadhg Casey was doing a spot of singing in the Stella in Bantry; Nurse McCarthy was in the audience where she spotted Tadhg for the first time. However, she soon realised that she wasn't alone in spotting Tadhg as he was a popular guy with the ladies. Mary on the other hand went home regularly to Rosscarbery to some local attraction, which still remains unclear. Tadhg was quick to realise that Nurse McCarthy was special and spent many late nights around the Fever Hospital.
However, one night on one of his late night visits to Nurse McCarthy's quarters he had to check out the back yard, when Nurse McCarthy had an un expected visitor and was lucky not to have been mistaken for a rat and shot with Dr. Murphy's shotgun. After his late night visits to the hospital he made his way back home along the old railway track. After pursuing this course of action for some time and after one of Nurse McCarthy's regular trips to Rosscarbery both Tadhg and Mary began to feel sick. Fortunately, Mary was alright in that she would be taken care of, Tadhg on the other hand decided to head straight for the fever hospital. As I said they were both sick - Nurse Mary was home-sick, Tadhg on the other hand was love-sick.
On arrival at the hospital Tadhg got a cure for them both. He asked Mary to marry him; that was in 1949. Tadhg wanted a short engagement. Mary on the other hand was a little cooler and managed to delay the wedding to the following year. However, he didn't wait very long as Mary and Tadhg were married on January 10th 1950. Nurse McCarthy retired to rear her family; Tadhg taught for many years in various schools in the Bantry area until his retirement and had many excellent and famous pupils.
Mary McCarthy married Tadg Casey. They had 6 children:
