The future Senator McCarthy was the son of Michael McCarthy, a stock buyer of Irish descent and Anna Baden McCarthy of German descent. His siblings were Mildred, Marion, and Austin. Eugene's paternal grandmother, Mary, lived with the family during his childhood years.
After graduating from St. John's University in Collegeville, MN, Gene taught high school in Minnesota and North Dakota. In the 1940's, he went to graduate school and began an on and off teaching career, teaching at his alma mater and at St. Thomas College in St. Paul, MN. During World War II, he worked as a code breaker in the Military Intelligence Division of the War Department.
Gene married Abigail Quigley in 1945. Their first child, a son, was born and died in April 1946. The couple subsequently had four other children, three daughters and a son.
Gene served five terms, from 1949 to 1959, in the U.S. Congress as a representative from Minnesota. He then served as Senator for two terms, from 1959 to 1971.
Though probably best known for his presidential run in 1968, Gene also ran for president several other times, including as a third-party candidate. He also continued to write and teach until his death.
