Missing Mining Man Is Found Dead In Car.
Nevada City (Nevada Co.), April 7. - The mystery of the disappearance last March 26th of James Jeremiah MaCarthy, 45, of Grass Valley, watchman of the Lava Cap Mine, was solved late yesterday with the discovery of his body by Edward Addington of Nevada City. The later came upon the McCarthy car while searching for firewood.
Coroner Alvah Hooper and Deputy Sheriff Carl Larsen, who investigated, said McCarthy had gone to considerable trouble in preparing for his death. they said he had tightly closed the car's windows and cut a hold in the rear seat through which he led a section of hose, attached at the other end to the motor's exhaust pipe.
Started Motor, Waited for Death.
Then, they said, McCarthy apparently started the motor, composed himself comfortably on the rear seat and waited for death.
The sheriff's office revealed McCarthy's wife, Mrs. Edith McCarthy, an employe at Camp Beale, reported on March 27th he was missing.
The woman said her husband met her on the afternoon of March 26th when her bus arrived from Camp Beale, drove her home in the family car and a few minutes afterward call to her through the window and said; "I'm leaving."
MCCarthy Feared Operation.
McCarthy was a native of Wisconsin, but had resided in Grass Valley for five years. He suffered an injury to his back while employed at the Lava Cap Mine in 1939 and since then has been employed as a watchmen. Recently he had been despondent because of the necessity for an operation upon his back.
Besides his wife McCarthy leaves his daughters, Mrs. Barbara Christensen and Miss Bernice McCarthy, and a son, James McCarthy, Jr., all of Grass Valley.
