Biography

A biography of Daniel McCarty is extremely problematic by the lack of documents that clearly connect various aspects of his life. A story can be pieced together from fragments of timelines, history and torn documents but, it remains a story that may or may not be the ancestor of this particular McCarty line, though we tend to believe that it is. [1]McCarty's of Edgefield SC Through DNA we have determined that the McCarty line descending from Daniel McCarty, which includes three brothers, Dennis, Daniel, and Thomas who make up a unique haplogroup, unrelated to others McCarty's in Edgefield.

Daniel McCarty was born about 1753 in North or South Carolina or a portion that was North Carolina but is now South Carolina. [2]

On March 26, 1784, pursuant of an Act of the General Assembly of South Carolina for the purpose of securing and granting lands in this State to the Officers and Soldiers we do grant 130 acres to Daniel McCarty on Ninety-Six District, on waters of Indian Creek of the Enoree River. [3]

On the 1790 Census of Newberry, South Carolina, 1790 Newberry SC census Daniel McCarty was registered with 2 males under 16 and 4 females. By this date, Daniel McCarty, in fact, had 2 known sons under 16. [4] Registered with Daniel McCarty were names that will again appear in his story, Samual Swinford, Brooks, Largent, Davis, Gibson, Neal...

On October 29, 1791, a survey was granted to Daniel McCarty for 130 acres in Ninety-Six District, on waters of Indian Creek of Enoree River. A metes and bounds survey of 130 acres on a branch of Headleys Creek adjoining Samuel Swinfords land and by John Garret's land. [5]

Before 1800's a group of neighbors residing near Headleys Creek in Newberry Co. SC moved across the river into Edgefield District and formed a church called Salem Church. organization of Salem Church The minutes for the church begin in 1803 but the evidence is strong that the move was before the 1800's.

1800 census of Edgefield County, South Carolina included Daniel McCartney and wife of over 45 years of age.1800 Edgefield SC census Among his neighbors in this census were the names of Riley, Berry, Worthington, Coleman, Abney. All of these men and their families were members of the Salem Church living close together within their community.

On February 21 1810, Daniel McCarty was included in a petition of residents of Indian Creek, the Salem Church area. This petition was for the county of Edgefield to be divided. Signers of this petition also included Dennis McCarty, son of Daniel, as well as most all of the male members of Salem Church. [6]

The 1810 census of Edgefield District, SC did not include Daniel McCarty, but it did include Widow McCarty, a woman over 45 with 2 sons ages 10-15. [7] 1810 Edgefield Census, This record also included the same close neighbors Berry, Neal, Brooks, Abney and others of the Salem Church.

By the 1820 census, there were no longer any records of this McCarty family in Edgefield, South Carolina. Folklore tells that 3 brothers went to Alabama during these years but one returned to SC. This tale was told before any connection of three brothers was known and long before the possibility of DNA for genealogists.

  1. Ten years ago, in order to try to prove that the 7 or so McCarty families living in Edgefield District, South Carolina in the 1790's were one family, a DNA Project was formed.
  2. Twenty plus years ago, when this researcher was young and naive to genealogy, I witnessed a document, miss-filed in Virginia, that referred to one Daniel McCarty of the Revolutionary War who received land in Newberry, SC for services to the government from North Carolina. Since I was young (and stupid) I let that document get away as being not our guy since he served from North Carolina, however, the memory remains but the document not recovered
