When Mahala Haley McClain McLane was born in 1783, her father, John, was 33, and her mother, Rachel, was 23. She married Posey (David) Matticks Matickes Mattox on December 6, 1802, in Bedford, Virginia. They had 13 children in 27 years. She died in 1849 in Greene, Indiana, at the age of 66, and was buried in Parke, Indiana.

"Mahala Matickes OR Maddox, Matticks, Mattox (take your pick:) Many folks at that time did not know how to read or write. Names were spelled like they sounded, so the surname evolved over time. We have known the surname as MATTOX, through the line of Posey's son, Alexander Reed Mattox, but other lines have chosen different spellings."
