John was born in Cherry Valley, Tyron County, New York colony.
Married to Jane Thompson on 22 April 1802, at Niagara, Upper Canada. The family moved from Stamford, Niagara approx 1835 to the newly settled Caledon area. The McClellan family is considered one of the founding families of Alton.
The 1852 and 1861 census describe him as a farmer. Six of his 8 children also moved to Caledon.
Died at Alton, Ontario, Canada and is buried in the Alton Cemetery with his wife Jane.
