James was born in July 1819 in County Fermanagh, Ireland, the son of Robert McClelland and Sarah Armstrong. His siblings were Andrew McClelland and John McClelland.
James migrated to Australia with his parents and brothers Andrew and John, and John's wife Jane, leaving from Plymouth toward the end of 1841 aboard the "Wilson" and arriving at Sydney Cove, Sydney, New South Wales on 7 January 1842. On the passenger manifest, he was recorded as James McLennan (20) a Farm Labourer, Protestant from Perth and could read and write. [1][2].
James passed away on 7 September 1875 at Richmond River, New South Wales, Australia [3].
