Biography

Nancy Amanda McClelland (aka Mclelland) was born May 15, 1837 in Columbia, Marion County, Mississippi, USA. Her parents were James B. "Jim" McClelland and Nancy McCoulskey (1). Her parents were living in Marion County, Mississippi in 1830 (2). In 1840 they were still living there (3). On August 20, 1850 they were still living in Marion County. She was 13 years old at that time. Her siblings living with her and her parents at that time were Mack (brother), N. (brother), Samuel (brother), William (brother), and M. (sister) (4). On January 10, 1856 she married Robert Goalsberry Tolar in Columbia, Marion County, Mississippi. Minister of the Gospel R. J. Blackburn performed the ceremony (5). Robert and Nancy started a family and continued to live in Columbia, Marion County, Mississippi during 1860 - 1870 (6). On July 26-27, 1880 they were living in Beat 2, Districts 1& 2, Carley's, Marion County, Mississippi. Robert was still working as a farmer, but had possibly been out of work for at least 2 months out of the year. He is listed on the census as born in Mississippi, just as both of his parents had been as well. Nancy is listed on the census as the wife of Robert. Their children living with them at this time were J.C. [John Cornelius], J. H. [James H.)], Nancy M. [Nancy Moran], W. W. [Walter Webb], M. H. [Mack Hardy], N. E.[Noel Earns], Mary E.[Mary Elizabeth], and S. E. [S. Emma] ( 7). In 1910 Nancy was living in Beat 1, Marion County, Mississippi and in 1920 it appears she lived there still. She passed away in Columbia, Marion County, Mississippi on February 12, 1921 at 12:10 AM. She passed away due to Senility. Her doctor had been J. C. Conner, M. D. (8). She is buried at Society Hill Cemetery in Prentiss, Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi, USA (8). All together Robert and Nancy had at least 11 children, William Thomas, Robert Ben, Mary Elizabeth, John Cornelius, James H., Nancy Moran, Walter Webb, Mack Hardy, Noel Earns, S. Emma, and Bradie Webb.
