Dennis McClendon, the immigrant of NC
Posted by: Joyce (Woodruff) Terrana, 15 Sep 1998
My direct line... notice repetitive use of Dennis and Simon as first names.
Dennis Mecklenden the immigrant, had son Dennis McLenden II, who had a son Dennis McClendon III b ca 1702 NC, d Dobbs Co NC. and wife Mary (of Cravens). Dennis III had son Simon McClendon b ca 1738 NC and 1st wife, a Sanford. Simon had son Dennis McClendon b 1770-1779 N.C. and married 1799 in Davidson Co TN to Winifred Green (?Greer). IN ADDITION, the siblings of any of the above also repeated many of these names when naming their sons creating a vast number of McClendon/McLendons throughout the south using these names.
genforum #26? FIRST: The first Dennis Mecklenden (McClendon) b 1645 came into N. C. with his 4 sons in early 1700s, his sons being: Francis, DENNIS II, Thomas, Bryant.
SECONDLY: Dennis II b 1675 Scotland and wife Margaret Early McHenry.
THIRDLY: Dennis McLendon III born CA 1702 D CA 1758 DOBBS CO, N. C. and wife Mary (Mary Dunn?)
FOURTHLY: Simon McClendon b 1738 N.C. d ca April 1809 Davidson Co TN and 1st wife (a Sanford)
FIFTHLY: Dennis McClendon b 1770 (above) and wife Winifred Greer/Green.
SIXTHLY: Dennis at least had the following sons ( probably more ):Sanford McClendon, Jesse McClendon, Dennis McClendon
genforum #96: I believe your Dennis McLendon II was married to Margaret Early, daughter of John Early of Bertie Co.NC. See Dennis' will Jan 19, 1725/26, and lists sons Dennis and John, daus Mary and Elizabeth, wife Margaret.Exec John Early, father, Francis and Thomas MacClendon, brothers. Perhaps she married McHenry after Dennis died. A will of a John Early of Bertie Co shows a dau Margaret McHenry. This will was in 1740 so it could be the same or could be the son of the father-in-law of Dennis. It is great to get information from all sources but you have to go back and prove as much as you can. I hope this helps you some.

Note

Almost certainly a daughter of Bryan/Bryant McClendon. These potential parents for Frances were in NC when she was born there, and they also moved to TN. They were in Lawrence Co TN in 1820 and Crawford Co MO in 1830.

Text: Biographical Souvenir of the State of Texas from 1889, article about Marshall S Pulliam.
"Marshall S. Pulliam is a native of Tennessee, but is now a substantial farmer in Collins [sic] County, Texas He was born August the 9th, A.D. 1818, was reared a farmer, and in 1845 came to Texas, which State has since been his home. His father was a native of North Carolina, who moved to Tennessee where Marshall S was born; from thence he moved to Missouri in 1829, where he died. His wife was Frances McClendon, who was also a native of North Carolina, and the mother of eight children, Marshall S being next to the youngest child.
At the time Mr M S Pulliam came to Texas the country was new and land cheap. He acquired a good home and, by industry and economy has secured for himself and family a nice competency for his old age, Mr Pulliam volunteered in 1846 in the Mexican War, and served eighteen months, and is now drawing a pension for said service..."
Text: Although marriages in Warren Co TN were recorded from 1808, it is believed that a county clerk destroyed all record books prior to 1852. Alsey and Frances would have been married before 1808 anyway.
