Disambiguation

There are two Nathaniel McClures that were both directly related to Halbert Samuel McClure. Their records and information have been mingled and confused together. One of my goals is to untangle these persons. To that end, I have created the Halbert Samuel McClure Family Mysteries page. Thus far it is a collection of sources. Hopefully the collection will grow to the point that this branch of our tree feels nice and solid.

Biography

This biography was auto-generated by a GEDCOM import. It's a rough draft and needs to be edited.

The rest of Halbert's family included his two brothers, Nathaniel born in 1685, and John who was born in 1706. Their father was James Andrew McClure who was born in 1660 and married about 1683. The name of his wife is not known. Nathaniel apparently never married. [1]

McClure-1249 and McClure-1222 appear to represent the same person because: The only information for McClure-1249 is his name, approximate year of birth and country, and death date and location. There are no family connections of any sort. The only source is an imported GEDCOM. This is very likely the Nathaniel McClure that is the brother of Halbert Samuel McClure as the source information is very rough, but all information that is present is very, very similar.
Addendum to previous comments: I spent many hours in May straightening out Nathaniel McClure confusion (there are two, uncle and nephew, brother and son of Halbert Samuel McClure, respectively, on FamilySearch. I wrote a biography for each there, about a month ago, so I remember the effort. Someone imported that information here and mixed up these two Nathaniel's again. I just got done (hopefully) disambiguating these persons again. This comment is made on the page of the UNCLE/BROTHER Nathaniel, born about 1685.
There is incorrect information here, I am currently investigating. The biography states "Nathaniel McClure, born in 1712 the eldest son of Halbert". The father currently listed is James (b. 1650) with mother Francis (b. 1665).

It is possible the Nathaniel mixup is between the son of James and the grandson of James (son of Halbert). However, both were not married to the same woman (Mary Harrelson) having two sets of babies at the same time.

On FamilySearch (which I have been trying to sort for a while, which is how I ended up on WikiTrees), I have these two Nathaniel's.

1. https://familysearch.org/tree/person/LX92-5KX/details, 1700-1761, married a Mary, no children, no sources, son on James Arthur Andrew McClure LJT2-FD4, 1660-1732, iffy sources (Find A Grave can be helpful, but that information is not on the grave marker and no primary sources are listed). There were multiple children in this family supposedly born in 1700.

2. https://familysearch.org/tree/person/LTQK-B8S, 1712-1761, also married a Mary, two physical genealogies as sources (in my possession, "McClure Families of Allen, Paulding and Van Wert Counties Ohio" by Ruth Woten Rambaugh, and "Following the McClures - Donegal to Botetourt" by McClure, Honts & Worley), son of Halbert McClure LT9C-51K, 1683–1754, who is son of that same James Arthur Andrew McClure LJT2-FD4, 1660-1732.

Combing the sources on WikiTree, I finally found a complete digitized copy of "The McClure Family", James Alexander McClure, Presses of Frank A. Owen, Petersburg, VA 1914, which is sourced by both of the sources listed for #2 above. This is a link to the PDF version: http://ia800202.us.archive.org/9/items/mcclurefamily00mccl/mcclurefamily00mccl.pdf, the index has: "McClure, Nathaniel, 135, 139, 149, 166"

p. 135 (PDF p. 159) is a Nathaniel born about 1752, son of Alexander born about 1717, son of Halbert (the one mentioned in #2 above, matches my sources) and Agnes. Not one of the two in question.

p. 139 (PDF p. 163) looks like #2, born about 1712, died 1760, son of Halbert and Agnes. Married a Mary, 10 children: Halbert (1740), James (?), Nathaniel (1747, another one on the same page), Dorothy (prob married David Dryden), Mary (married Joseph Reed), Hannah (married John Smiley), Alexander (1749-1765), Thomas (1753), Margaret (born 1757, married a Lee), Moses (born 1760, happens to be my ancestor).

p. 149 (PDF p. 173) was born in 1779 and isn't one of the two in question.

p. 166 (PDF p. 192) was born 9 April 1785 and isn't one of the two in question.

Through the magic of technology, I searched the entire text for "Nathaniel" and didn't find any references for who could be either of the two in question.

I went back to the sources I listed in #2. These both focus on the descendants of Halbert (1683-1754). The Rumbaugh didn't have anything for #1, was well sourced and focused for #2. The Donegal to Botetourt lists the children of Halbert and Agnes (born 1709-1725), then says "The rest of Halbert's family included his two brothers, Nathaniel born in 1685, and John who was born in 1706. Their father was James Andrew McClure who was born in 1660 and married about 1683. The name of his wife was not known. Nathaniel apparently never married. John married Nancy, who was born about 1710 and they had four sons. Two were born in Ireland, Arthur in 1732 and James in 1734. The other two were born in the Colony of Virginia, John in 1736 and Halbert in 1738." (page 10) I did not see additional information about Halbert (1683-1754)'s brother Nathaniel (1685), but I suspect this Nathaniel is #1.

I have seen zero primary sources for Halbert's wife's maiden name, though McTavish and Steele can be found in various places. I've also seen zero primary sources for Nathaniel #2's wife Mary's last name, though the Mary Harrelson attached to both #1 and #2 seems to be abundant. Except for figuring out which Nathaniel was married to the Mary mother of this set of children, or which children belong to which Nathaniel if you don't subscribe to the Halbert's brother Nathaniel being #1 theory, those are topics for another day.

Sorry so lengthy and confusing. If only they'd selected different first names once in a while. ;)

McClure-1413 and McClure-1222 are not ready to be merged because: We need to identify his father and mother. I have his father as Andrew, you have Halbert (who was Andrew's son) Different mothers. Need proof of parentage.
