Disambiguation

There are two Nathaniel McClures that were both directly related to Halbert Samuel McClure. Their records and information have been mingled and confused together. One of my goals is to untangle these persons. To that end, I have created the Halbert Samuel McClure Family Mysteries page. Thus far it is a collection of sources. Hopefully the collection will grow to the point that this branch of our tree feels nice and solid.

The McClure Family

The McClure Family is a genealogy written by James Alexander McClure, published in 1914, and is now available freely in its entirety[2]. Pages 139-140 are dedicated to Nathaniel and his family.

Nathaniel McClure, son of Halbert and Agnes McClure, born about 1712. Wife, Mary. Probably the same that settled first of Middle River of the Shenandoah, member of Captain John Christian's militia company 1742, and whose son, Alexander, was baptized by Rev. John Craig, March 10, 1749. In Rockbridge County, was a member of Capt. John Buchanan's militia company 1742. His farm (deeded in 1847), was on Mill Creek, cor. Moses McClure. Was constable 1745; member Timber Ridge church 1753, signing the call for Rev. John Brown. He died in 1760 and his wife Mary did 1767. For their wills see Chalkey, Vol. III, pp. 62 and 101. Ten children:

Rumbaugh Book

Nathaniel McClure, born 1712 the eldest son of Halbert, purchased from the estate of Benjamin Borden 180 acres of land in the Borden Tract on 1 May 1747. (Augusta Co., Va. Deed Bk. 1, pg. 265). Nathaniel McClure was in both John Christian's Militia and Capt. John Buchanan's Militia in 1742. (Chalkley Vol. 2, pg. 508) From the WILL of Nathaniel McClure dated 5 Feb 1761 and proven 19 May 1761 (Augusta Co. , Val Will Bk. 3, pgsl 18 & 19) we find the name of his wife to be Mary who was the administrator of his estate. The names of his children were found on pgs. 139 & 140 of the James A. McClure book.[3][4]

She goes on to list the children of Nathaniel and Mary, sourced explicitly from the James A. McClure[2]book information included above. There is little additional information. It says the daughter Mary was baptized 2 March 1747, Alexander was baptized 10 March 1749, and that Moses died between 30 June 1810 and 10 April 1811. [3]

We are concerned here with the families that settled in Allen, Paulding and Van Wert Counties of Ohio which were the Samuel, Moses, Mary McClure Johnson and Alexander families. These families are marked ( * ) . smcclure rootsweb page NOTE: I was checking sources and noticed the information in this section was all taken verbatim from Ruth Woten Rumbaugh's book, which is now properly sourced. This section is decidedly about the Nathaniel McClure that was the son of Halbert and Agnes, not the Nathaniel that was the brother of this Halbert.

Research Notes

Upon creation of profile McClure-4266, she had McClure-1413 and Harrelson-219 connected as parents. While it is conceivable that McClure-4266 and McClure-1237 are the same person, there is currently no legitimate source on this profile and the parents have been disconnected. -- McClure-3513 12:16, 11 April 2018 (EDT)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nathaniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathaniel:

Not only are there more Nathaniel's, but this profile has no sources. There is a history of bad 1700s McClure GEDCOMs circulating the internet.

McClure-1413 and McClure-1499 appear to represent the same person because: The birth location for McClure-1499 is incorrect (should be Ireland), but the otherwise the very scant information in this record is an exact match for McClure-1413 which I have been studying in depth. See https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Halbert_Samuel_McClure_Family_Mysteries&public=1 for source information.
Addendum to previous comments: I spent many hours in May straightening out Nathaniel McClure confusion (there are two, uncle and nephew, brother and son of Halbert Samuel McClure, respectively, on FamilySearch. I wrote a biography for each there, about a month ago, so I remember the effort. Someone imported that information here and mixed up these two Nathaniel's again. I just got done (hopefully) disambiguating these persons again. This comment is made on the page of the NEPHEW/SON Nathaniel, born about 1712.
Please see lengthy comment on McClure-1222 about Nathaniel confusion.
Julie it looks like someone else has added another Nathaniel McClure. Can you please initiate another merge. Thank you.
