Nelson McClure, M.D. - was born in Virginia on February 6, 1829, son of Elijah (a farmer) & Rhoda (Pauley) McClure, both deceased and also originally from Virginia (as noted in the 1850 census when Nelson still lived at home with his parents and siblings and worked as a laborer).
He was united in wedlock with Mary Jane Chapman, his paternal first cousin and daughter of William & Mary (McClure) Chapman of Kentucky, and they were blessed with 1 child; Louisa Hester, who married Felix Pigg, and resides in Lawrence Co, KY. She is the mother of 3 children; U.S. Grant, Gypsie J., & Lucy L.
In Kanawha Co, West Virginia on August 8th, 1863, the Rev R. Swinburn joined in marriage Nelson McClure & Nancy (Hall) Clark; both Nelson and Nancy were previously married and their spouses had passed away. Nancy was born in Fayette Co., WV, in 1833, and is the daughter of Moses & Nancy (Fulley) Hall, both deceased.
To Dr. & Mrs. McClure, 5 children have been given, born as follows: Rhoda Annie Laura, 11/30/1865; Joseph A., 6/19/1867; M. Elijah N., Nancy A. E., Rose B. H., 7/1876.
Nelson McClure was a township clerk, secretary of the board of education & constable of Kanawha Co.
Since the organization of Lincoln Co., he was constable & member of the educational board in Washington district. He enlisted in the civil war in 1864, and was in Company M, 7th WV Cavalry, serving until the close of the war, and was discharged at Wheeling, WV.
Dr. McClure resided on his farm at the headwaters of Fuquas Creek, Washington District, and was at the time the only practicing physician of the vicinity. His address was Rome P. O. Box Kanawha Co., WV.
Dr. Nelson McClure died July 16th, 1897 in Lincoln, West Virginia.
