DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

Well, good. I'm glad that something good came out of this confusion.

I am unable to locate the FamilySearch records you indicate, for William Vardeman and Ann Ayres, except that William Vardeman is a DIFFERENT William than the one married to Sarah Fine (M116-9PF and KNJG-G3X). This habit of re-using first names is cause for SO MANY problems with us genealogists!

William, husband of Sarah Fine-McCormick has very different birth and death dates than the William husband of Ann Ayres. So, I am more confused than before. Perhaps you can help me clear this up. William Who? dates WHEN?

And I mis-wrote in my first email (above). All of Doris Rouner Pickhardt's research is NOW available to me (instead of NOT available to me). Her son said none of her children wanted it, and so he mailed me 6 boxes of papers. I have gone through them, looking especially for McCormicks. Unfortunately, nothing in there was helpful in this particular setting. Maybe I'll take another look in the very near future. Doris was a very organized and serious genealogist; unfortunate that she is no longer with us.

Cool, Sandy.

It's great that Doris left you all that material. Hopefully some of these mysteries can get cleared up. Do you happen to know who "petunia43" is over on Ancestry? It's her (private) tree that is shown as a source here.

The Family Search records showing some of William's children as being children of Ann Ayres are in his Sources section. I too have begun to wonder if there really was one William Vardeman who married Ann Ayres and later Sarah, or whether indeed these are two different men, as implied by the two distinct Family Search profiles. The relationships, though not the dates, on KNJG-G3X match what we had previously for the father of Sarah (Vardeman) McCormick, except for the better-documented relationships shown on M116-9PF. Since both Family Search Williams fit, to some extent, our William here, I'm intuitively inclined to regard them as duplicates there, pending clarification. But, my, oh, how we do need more documentation! 8-)

So sorry that you do not agree with this bit of information. My source is Doris Rouner Pickhardt, a serious genealogist until her death several years ago. She had done a LOT of research, and all of her research is not available to me. Her source for some of this information is a letter from Effie Morrey in 1979; Effie was another serious genealogist before her death many years ago. FamilySearch shows her marriage to William Vardeman; and yes, that information comes from me also. It is also true that Sarah's name "Fine" was created when this profile page was created in 2013; I did not add the "Fine", nor the "McCormick". When the page was created in 2013, "Fine" and "McCormick" were already in place. I do not know the source, in 2013, for this information---way before I became the manager.

Thank you, Sandy. I really was as much intrigued (and still am) as I was doubtful. I never had much to go on with Sarah Fine in the first place; it just took me by surprise that she had suddenly (or so it seemed) become Sarah McCormick. And then there is that bio indicating that Sarah McCormick daughter of James and granddaughter of John Isaac McCormick had died unmarried. It's hard to make a good call without good documentation. By the same token, you got me to reexamine what we do have, and I noticed Sarah's husband's first wife Ann Ayres and the records over on Family Search that show Ann was the mother of William's older children, so I came to realize that Ann would have been the mother of William's daughter Sarah who married Samuel McCormick, which is how I got here in the first place. So you've really been a big help.

I'm very intrigued by the idea that Sarah Fine, wife of William Vardeman and mother of Sarah Vardeman McCormick, was herself a McCormick, but where is the evidence? The source cited is, in effect, hearsay (not to mention not readily accessible). I'm not questioning that James McCormick had a daughter Sarah, but James' father's bio over on Ancestry (see /also http://www.usgennet.org/usa/in/county/clark/dr-john-mccormick.html) indicates that she died unmarried.
