John Thomas McCormick, named for his two grandfathers, Thomas McCormick and John Tweet, died at the age of 41. This past year, I've been watching and following too much golf. Every time I watch golf, I remember Dad out on the course with me as caddy. His game was better than most of the golfers who don't make the cut. As captain of the Firestone golf team, he led the way. As captain of our little family he led too. He was a man of faith and humor. He had great determination and loyalty. To many he was uncle Tom, to others he was Tommy. To me he was Dad. After we moved from Tracy, Minnesota to Ohio, he became known as John, prompting my Grandma to call him John-Tom.

My dad served in WWII, mom served in the USO ... they met. How else could a boy from a small town in Southwest Minnesota meet a girl from NYC? He traveled around the world, supplying oil on a liberty ship, simply to find the love of his life. It not only preserved, restored the freedom of this land but brought my sisters and I and all of our children and grandchildren into being. A wonderous day is memorial day. Share in the freedom and life brought about by all those who sacrifice, for we all meet in the streets not knowing the full stories we all bear.

Dad was born 88 years ago today. Among the things he did well was golf. I learned how to caddie for him at a young age. I was paid a dime and a coke and a candy bar (a 20 cent value at the time). We would be out at Firestone Country Club almost at sunrise. The dew would make rooster tails off the ball on the putting green. When Dad's foursome would tee off about 7 or 7:30 we would walk and chase the ball for about four hours. I loved raking the sand after dad shot out of it, but that didn't happen often as he was a very good golfer. He was the captain of Firestone's Company team (where he worked as a truck tire design engineer) and I cannot remember him scoring above 80, most of the time it was in the high 60s and low 70s. He did shoot a 46 on nine holes the last time we went out, but, he had only one lung and was riddled with cancer at the time. He showed me perseverance and indeed love. The fourteen years I got to share with him, have indeed brought me to where I am.
