Biography

Mac was born in 1903.[1] He was the son of Alexander George McCormick and Jessie Stuart Patton.[2]

Mac left home at age 15.[2] He worked as a bank teller for a time before later moving to Alberta, probably in the early 1930s.[2] His brother Stuart was already in Edmonton and looking after the family flour mill in the west.[2] Mac became involved with Mr. Draper who was exploring uses for Alberta's tar sands at that time.[2] They took some tar sands to Fort McLeod and laid a road.[2]

Mac then joined the salt mill (name unknown) in Waterways,[3] now part of the Municipality of Wood Buffalo, prior to joining the Hudson Bay Company[3] to manage its Waterways operations.[2] During his early time in Waterways he roomed with Uncle Bill (Bill Tillett).[2] Uncle Bill left in the early 40's to join the war, before he came back to Waterways.[2]

Mac did not meet Marion Graham long before they married in 1939.[2] Marion gave birth at age 41 to son John Stuart (Stuart).[2] Elizabeth was adopted a few years later.[2]

Mac was eventually "given" the Imperial Oil distributership[3] by the previous owner who was retiring, which he operated as McCormick Oil Distributers Ltd. He was also involved in local politics.[3] McCormick Road in Wood Buffalo is named after him.[2]

He and Marion retired to Edmonton in 1971[3] where Stuart and Elizabeth were living with their families.[2] Mac died on 13 Jan 1974 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.[3][4]
