Biography

Bernard was the youngest of seven known children of John and Catherine Gallaghan McCormick. There is a record for his next older brother as born in Tecumseh Township, Simcoe County, Canada West.[1] It is not clear whether Bernard was also born there, or in Peel Township in Wellington County, where his family had moved by 1847, when his father purchased land there.[2]. Relying on the 1852 census when Bernard would have been seven on his next birthday, we can estimate Bernard to have been born in 1845.[3]

Bernard grew up on the farm[4] and continued farming with his father and brother James.[5] Bernard purchased the east half of Lot 12, Concession 1 from his father for $500 in 1869.[6]Bernard was living on his own farm in 1881, and John Connolly was working for him.[7]

Bernard McCormick died in 1887, and is reported to be buried with his father in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Macton,[8] but is not listed on the Ontario Genealogical Society transcription of burial records for the cemetery.

Research Notes

There is an 1884 death record for a three-year old Bernard McCormick in Peel Township but the age of the decedent is listed as three. This may be a notation error, as there appear to be no other Bernard McCormicks in the township at that time.[9]
