Biography

John was the sixth of seven children of John and Cecily McCormick, and the fourth son, who was given his father's name.[1] His death record indicates his birthplace as Tottenham, in Tecumseh Township in Simcoe County.[2] By 1851, when John was seven, the family had moved to Peel Township in Wellington County. When he was 17, John was still attending school, living with his family in Peel Township.[3] Ten years later, John and two of his brothers were still farming with their father, though their mother had died and two older brothers had set up their own households.[4]

When he was 31, John married Hanora Laughlin in Middlesex County.[5]

In 1881 John was farming with his brother James in Peel Township. John and Hanora had two children, after their first born child had died.[6] Ten years later, the family had grown to five children. [7]

By 1901, John and his family had moved to adjacent Wellesley township, in Waterloo County. His sister Rose and her husband Thomas McMahon had a farm nearby.[8]

In 1911, John was still farming in Wellesley, Lot 10, Concession 12, with his son Thomas, and his children Margaret and Joseph were still living with John and Hanora.[9] By 1921, Hanora had died, but Thomas, Margaret, and Joseph were still living with their father.[10]

John died at age 79[11] and is buried wife his wife in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Macton, Ontario.[12][13]
