Biography

Lucy is listed in this profile as being born in 1791, but her gravestone suggests that she was 78 in 1874, making her year of birth circa 1796. She is the daughter of Laughlin McCormick and Jean Lindsay. [1][2]

Carlie Woodman's information also indicates that "Lucy" was also the sister of Lucille "Lucy" McCormick. Darlene Campbell's information indicates that Lucille "Lucy" McCormack (sic) was married to the same William "Mowat" as this Lucy. If the genealogies are to be believed, there are three different Lucy McComicks born between 1791 and 1796 to Laughlin and Jean. There is no documentation beyond the 1825, 1831, 1861 and 1871 census records showing there to be other Lucy's of that generation. Until further information is discovered... this is the only Lucy McCormick who marries William Mowat.

Research of Scottish archives show a Lucy McCormick born to "Laughlan" (McCormick) & "Jane" (Lindsay) and baptized on 17 December 1791.[3] This is a close match.

The spelling of the family name of "McCormick" is confirmed through Lucy's gravestone. The inscription reads: "In Memory of Lucy McCormick. - Wife of William Mowat. - DIED - Mar. 19th 1874, - Aged 78 years. - Native of Scotland. --- Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord --- [4]

Lucy "McCormick" Mowat (though typed out as "Morvat") shows up in the 1861 Canada Census as a 67 year old widow (also listed as a "Mother", who is "Scottish Presbyterian" in the predominantly French-speaking Town of Maria QC. This is odd, as everyone else on the census form is recorded using French words. Lucy is recorded using English words.[5] Lucy would have been born in 1794.

Lucy "Morret" shows up in the 1871 Canada Census[6] as an 80 year old widow, living with the same family members - Charles (age 45), Lucy (age 31), and Elizabeth (age 32) as in the 1861 census. This would have Lucy born in 1791.
