Biography

Dr. F.M. McCormick, physician and surgeon, Ruston, Lincoln Parish, La., is a native of Jasper county, Miss., and was born November 27, 1837. His parents, who were natives of South Carolina, bore the names of Francis and Catherine(Heidelburg) McCormick, and had fifteen children, of whom Dr. McCormick was the eighth in order of birth. His father lived many years in Mississippi and came from that state to Union Parish, La., in 1849. He was a planter of note and died in 1876, his first wife having died in 1858. Twelve of their children grew to maturity, and five of their sons served during the Civil War, all of whom survived the same. The Doctor spent his school days mostly in Mississippi and Louisiana and was a student at the Frankfort Military Institute for one year. In 1861 he entered the Confederate service as a member of Smith's Mississippi Artillery, and was later transferred to the Nineteeth Louisiana Infantry. He had, previous to his enlistment, devoted considerable time to the study of medicine, and during the latter portion of his term of service he was detailed to hospital duty, but he was in several important engagements with the Army of Tennessee, including those of Shiloh, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, and others. When the war closed he was on hospital duty at Macon, Ga. After returning home he eesumed the study of medicine, and soon entered the State Medical University at New Orleans, La., from which he graduated in 1869. He began the practice of his profession in Union parish and practiced in Vernon and Monroe, La., and removed to Ruston in 1885, where he built up a successful practice where he now resides. He was married in 1870 to Miss Leonora C. Sholar, a daughter of John and Catherine (Webb) Sholar, whose family are prominent in northern Louisiana. Dr., and Mrs. McCormick have two daughters living and they are all members of the Methodist Episcopal church of Ruston, La., and the Doctor is a Royal Arch Mason.
